How to Become a Volunteer Trail Steward

Most of Cape Ann's trails are located on properties owned by one of the municipalities or conservation organizations. We work with these landowners to identify properties in need of stewardship, and to identify volunteers interested in working to keep our trail system up and running.

The primary job of the trail steward is to alert the Cape Ann Trail Stewards to issues such as dumping, inappropriate trail use, invasive species and trail damage. Some stewards also periodically pick up small trash at the trail heads.

Most stewards adopt the trails that they enjoy most, so being a steward simply means making note of what you see during your normal visits. There is no obligation to visit the property at any particular time or at a given frequency.

Stewards are not asked to "police" the trails, or enforce rules or regulations. If you see inappropriate use or dumping underway, do not intervene. Simply alert us by email or phone after your visit.
